Our
Mission:
|
|
We at the
Long Island Parrot Society, are happy to help
assist you with your search for a new home for
your companion parrot.
LIPS' Parrot
Placement Program successfully places many
birds each year. All species from parakeets to
macaws are placed in qualified, caring homes. We
look forward to helping you find the perfect new
home for your bird. We realize that
PET birds are offered for adoption due to various
circumstances, including divorce, allergy, death
of a loved one, moving, or new family member. We
are aware that these birds ARE beloved pets, and
their future depends upon LIPS helping them find
the most nurturing environment possible. In many
cases it is a heart wrenching experience for all
involved. The goal of this program is to help the
owner locate a caring and quality home for each
individual bird.

REGULAR
Placement Program:
|
|
With our
regular placement program the bird stays in your
home for as long as possible. Parrots are very
sensitive creatures and we try not to stress them
by moving them too many times. The bird goes
from your home to the new home. Because of
extreme circumstances we are sometimes asked to
remove a bird from the home immediately.
This bird will require our emergency foster
program. We DO NOT recommend moving a bird
out of the home unless it is absolutely
necessary. **SEE EMERGENCY FOSTER PROGRAM

EMERGENCY
Foster Program:
|
|
We prefer
that you keep your pet in your home as long as
possible. If removal becomes necessary you
may ask us to find a temporary Foster Home for
your bird. We may not have a Foster
Situation available as our fostering resources are
limited. If we do not have anything
immediately we can try to locate a situation. Locating
a foster home may take a little time. Please
be patient while we arrange for foster care. If
you ask LIPS to take possession of your pet, you
will be asked to sign a relinquishment form.
We must have the signed form before we remove a
bird from your residence. Once LIPS
takes possession of the bird, the responsibility
and the decision for placing the bird belongs to
the LIPS Parrot Foster and Placement Team.
If
the circumstance warrants us taking possession of
your bird we request a monetary donation to the
Long Island Parrot Society. Your donation will
assist with the day to day care of your bird while
we look for a new and permanent home.

The
Candidates: |
|
Adoption
candidates are made eligible by the Parrot
Placement Committee of the Long Island
Parrot Society. Many applicants are longstanding
LIPS members. All applicants will have have passed
a home inspection prior to approval as eligible
candidates. Members who are
interested in adopting your bird will contact you
directly at the telephone number/s you supply us
with. We do not give out your address - if you
speak to a candidate that you think is a good
match you can give them your address and
directions to your home after you have arranged a
meeting. We do not direct people to show up at
your home unannounced (we are sure you don't want
that either!).
Unless your
parrot is moved into a foster situation the Final Decision on who
adopts your bird is yours. If you are
uncomfortable with any of the candidates -
Do not transfer ownership of the bird. Let us know
that you want to see additional people and we will
refer other candidates to you.
We are happy to assist you in this
endeavor - however the ultimate responsibility for
placing the bird is still yours. Please continue
to look for a home yourself as well. | |

Fees: |

NO MONEY
CHANGES HANDS BETWEEN THE CANDIDATE AND THE FORMER
OWNER. We
supply this placement service free of charge,
however, should the need arise for us to take
possession of your bird into a foster situation we request a
monetary donation to the Long Island Parrot
Society. This will assist in the day to day care
of your bird while we look for its new and
permanent home.
Our volunteers spend hours of
their time, energy and a good deal of their own
money to locate good homes for displaced parrots.
Donations are greatly appreciated.
We do not
help people sell their parrots OR accessories. If
you choose to use this service all items belonging
to the bird (cage, food, toys etc) as well as the
parrot go to the new home free of charge.
In
some cases people have asked for money for the
cage or accessories - even for the bird! Adoption
candidates have been instructed to leave and not
adopt the bird if they are asked for money.
We
want to make this point very clear. If you
choose to use our service you will not be paid for
the bird, cage or accessories.

Info on
Your Parrot: |
|
*Don't hesitate to send us photos of
PLUCKED parrots. Many candidates are VERY
sympathetic to parrots that have feather and
behavior issues.
| |
|
|
|
|
|
*While
you are still in possession of the bird please write
down the things a new owner will need to know:
Favorite foods, special care and normal behavior etc.,
should be included in this report. This will help your
bird acclimate to its new home and reduce the
incidence of phone calls from the new owner. LIPS
works very hard to find your bird a new home. If your
bird becomes unavailable (change of heart, found a new
home on your own), please notify us immediately so
that we may utilize our volunteers and resources for
bird that is still awaiting a new home.
